These prices were updated 1/24/2013
I do not know about you, but working in a small business I
don’t need that many servers, at most a dozen or so. Not a large enough set of servers to use
complicated analytics to reduce our AWS bill every month. I figure out by hand what our needs are and
what the server costs will be. With
that in mind I keep an RDS pricing chart
for quick reference to compare hourly, monthly, and yearly prices (with
reserved instances). All these prices
are for the East region (which match the West-2 “Oregon” region as well.
RDS
Amazon RDS (Relational Database Service) is a relational
database as a service. Currently it
comes in two flavors MySQl, Oracle and SQL Server. Amazon runs the database on an EC2 instance
but does not give you access directly to that instance rather it provides other
tools to manage the DB. Here are some
of the services RDS provides
·
Ability to increase DB (hard drive) size on the
fly
·
Scale database up or down with minimum, in some
case, no downtime.
·
Automatic backups. Enables point in time recovery.
·
Read replicate databases
·
Multi-zone configuration for auto failover
·
Monitoring
I will only go over MySQL and Oracle Prices
This does not include the costs of disk space which costs
$0.10 /GB per month.
There is also a provisioned IOPS RDS, which I will not go
over here yet….

Costs per Year
You can also pay a one-time fee for a “Reserved”
instance. A reserved instance does two
things, it guarantees you a spot for
your server (should a zone get full… a rare thing) and it also lowers your
hourly charge for running the server.
There are a few different options for the upfront costs,
light medium and Heavy. One year or
three year contract. For these
calculations I assume a heavy usage (24x7) and only a 1 year contract.
I am also only going to go over the MySQL prices
